Project OSLO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF THE ARTS

A backdrop for displaying students’ work and progress
In autumn 2010 all departments of the Oslo National Academy of the Arts were co-located in an old sailcloth factory in the Grünerløkka district in Oslo. The academy comprises a set of refurbished brick buildings and a new wing.

We were responsible for the interiors and room programme in the new communal areas of the academy and for workstations for students and staff. The room programme was developed in close consultation with the academy. It was important to create spaces that allow the students’ creativity to flourish. The furniture was designed to be functional, withstand heavy use and have a uniform design profile.

The design concept uniting the different interiors was based on a neutral colour palette within the building structure serving as a backdrop for highlighting the students’ works. The academy’s original design programme was used as a pointer and inspiration to make more liberal colour choices for fixed and moveable furniture. Additional elements had to generate contrast in an otherwise neutral environment.

All the workstations for students and staff were developed in close collaboration with the different user groups at the academy. We designed work desks and storage units for the students as well as meeting tables for staff. The series of furniture is based on a simple and industrial design where key elements are identical. Variations in materials, sizes and functionality meet the needs of the different departments. All fixed furniture in the café and at the information desk such as benches, tables, sofas, seating groups and terraced seating was designed as a collection in a simple, industrial style that communicates with the architecture of the building.

The bespoke elements (reception desk, library desk and display cabinets) have been given the same form as other specially designed elements, the emphasis being on materials and tactility.
